Should we all be patriots?
As we chant chime o land of glory/
one more time/
raising goose pimples/
standing transfixed/
misty-eyed/
before the tricolor ensign/
pondering our bearing/
as the flag soars/
– flashing one star
ascends higher/
– adorning two stars
descends/
– bereft of one star
pregnant with tangled tales of heroes unsung/
bloated with peppery chicanery.
let’s all be patriots
like our forebears singing to the stake/
songs that we have failed to remember/
as we sit and papper the cracks/
waiting for godot to do our/ bidding/
though there is no telephone to heaven.
